Yoga Do's And Don'ts

Do: Invest in a good quality mat
I like bringing my own mat – even if some studios provide them. There’s just something about rolling out your own to get in the zone! At the moment I’m loving one from No Ka‘Oi – it has a soft quilted finish and is super comfy for both practice and end-stretch. Other key things to look out for include moisture-wicking properties and stable grip.

Do: Opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics
A good yoga session will make you sweat more than you’d expect, so it’s important that your clothes are both breathable and lightweight (especially for hot yoga). Because you are also bending and stretching, activewear that compliments your natural range of motion is also a must. I love TINDERALA tonal colourways and luxurious fabrics. I also like LNDR for their seamless knit, high-waist leggings and on-point colours.

Do: Tie up your hair
Your hair can also be a major distraction during practice. I either opt for a messy bun or a ponytail to keep hair out of my face! I also always have a towel handy. If I’m heading somewhere post-yoga, I usually whack on a cap to hide any evidence like the LA Dodgers Cap by New Era.

Don’t: Wear loose clothing
Oversized tanks and tops can be such a distraction during practice (especially during downward dog!) so instead, opt for tighter fitting clothing that sits close to the body. I love a sleek pair of leggings (the studio is also a perfect excuse to show off a colourful print!) and a supportive crop with a high-neckline and a touch of mesh for extra ventilation.

Don’t: Wear anything with zippers
Zippers can hurt! Instead, opt for soft, seamless pieces that sit flush against your body. Adidas by Stella McCartney has an amazing range of seamless pieces designed to enhance flexibility.

Don’t: Wear transparent tights
Do the people behind you a favour and make sure your tights aren’t see-through! Do a few squats and bends in your tights to check if they’re suitable for yoga practice prior to class. ALO Yoga Moto and Beyond Yoga leggings are both favourites.
